The Process And Machines Used For CD Duplication

By Ruby Prince

Duplication and replication are two most common methods used in copying CDs, DVDs and the more recent Blu-ray discs. CD duplication is the more popular and easier method owing to its faster speeds and lower costs than replication. This is done on recordable discs using duplicators, often for less than 1000 pieces.

Replication which takes longer involves a Glass Master stamping data on the CDs. This requires a greater volume copies to be made, usually more than 500 and it also takes much longer.

A good number of professional centers offer high quality at great prices. Many are capable of 24-hour or 48-hour deliveries depending the complexity of the project, the existing workload and proximity to clients. Many companies require a minimum quantity of CDs in order to lower the cost of production and this usually be a hundred pieces. A higher quantity of production reduces the unit cost for piece in the process.

The master to be used for making copies should be made using dedicated software for burning like Roxio and Nero for the proper format and quality. Any faults found will be duplicated identically on the copies produced. One should therefore avoid using Apple iTunes, Windows Media Player or any other program which comes packaged with the operating system to reduce such errors.

The duplicates should match the master in every aspect, with the exception of a person intentionally changing the content or design. An MP3 master CD for example cannot result in audio CDs. It will only produce mp3 copies unless a conversion was done beforehand to come up with a new audio master.

One should ask about the quality of discs to be used as well as the packaging and samples of work done. This ensures they see the quality before their own work is done. Color printing is possible on many materials including transparent plastic wallets, spindles and cardboard wallets.

Artwork and design may be required to accompany the master. This can be done by using simple software of professional design software the likes of Adobe Photoshop for the more complex designs. Most dedicated burning software come bundled with design programs with various sizes and samples to choose from.

High end CD duplication centers offer full color printing processes with high resolutions of up to 4800x1200 dots per inch (dpi) using sophisticated hardware like R-Quest, which offer high quality, do high-capacity and at high speeds. Such machines are also usually network capable meaning they can be integrated and controlled from computers and also media configurable to support many end-users from different terminals.
