Music Teacher vs. Teaching Yourself - What's the Easiest Method to Learn a Musical Instrument?

By Ruth Williams

Learning to play an instrument is a great talent. We can all appreciate the skill involved, but few of us actually learn to play. If you've always wanted to learn, there is no time like the present. But is it best to hire a music teacher, or can you learn on your own?

Professional Lessons

Getting taught by a professional is the most common way to learn an instrument, but why? Here we examine the advantages and disadvantages of getting professional guidance:

Pros

Taking professional lessons is the quickest way to learn the basics of your chosen instrument. As you develop, they will be able to teach you the more complicated parts. Music teachers help you get to know all the technicalities inside out.

Struggling to master your new instrument? They are always on hand to make everything a little clearer. You can take lessons as regularly as you need to, and practice in the mean time.

Cons

Music lessons can be expensive. With many people struggling to make ends meet, is this really a luxury you can afford to be paying for? Depending on your level of experience and particular instrument, the cost can skyrocket.

If you have a particularly busy schedule, you can also struggle to fit it regular lessons. Relying on someone else is also a turn off for many people. If you work full time, it is sometimes impossible to find a mutually beneficial time.

You often have to learn what you're told to learn. This lack of freedom over what you get to learn can put many people off. By learning in this way, some people find it difficult to adapt their skills to play anything else.

DIY Tuition

So what about DIY tuition? Is this a more viable option? Here are some things to bear in mind:

Pros

Learning yourself gives you so much more freedom; you can learn on your own terms. You can dedicate as much time to learning as possible. You can also learn in the way that works best for you. For example, learning individual notes and putting them together, or learning a full song.

This freedom also transcends into how you teach yourself. YouTube videos are a great way to teach yourself how to play, for example. This way you can continue to go over a specific aspect until you have it mastered. Renting or buying DVD and book tutorials are also really easy and affordable ways to teach yourself.

Disadvantages

However if you're struggling, where can you turn? When your teacher is you, there is sometimes no way to make it over this hurdle. This is often the time that DIY learners, give up.

If you teach yourself, you may miss out on the small but vital details. For example, the tutorials you use may not cover tuning your instrument. Missing this information can result in costly damage to your instrument.

What's Best?

Unfortunately, there is no right or wrong answer. You have to make your decision on what is best for you. If you have a little background knowledge, why not start with trying to teach yourself and see how it goes? The best advice is to try both methods and find out which works best for you.
