Modern Impressionist Artists: A Closer View

By Casandra Newton

Modern impressionist artists can be considered as the founders of contemporary painting. It first started in Paris in the 1860s but it later on spread to many other parts of the world. Coming up with a finely finished and detailed painting was what conventional art required but these people shunned away from this. Their main aim was to capture the temporary, sensory effect of a scene.

They created images that could only hit the eyes of the viewer temporarily. This they did from the open environments and surroundings but not inside the studios. They did not actually require realistic representations to come up with their images.

Optical effects of light were employed to try and paint a picture of the passing time, changes in weather, climatic and other shifts in the atmosphere. By using canvas as their primary material, these painters achieved a lot. To come up with successful paintings, they used slackened works of brush. Pure and strong colors could only be used from bleached palettes.

Besides, they also persisted on expressing the all-purpose view of a particular sight from the outside environment. Reflected light was used as a representation of primary colors through short strokes of brushes. Capturing the sight of the subject instead of the subject itself was what they strived to.

In their paintings, painters were now allowed to include a wide range of things in the surrounding environment. Unlike before, paint was not given time to dry but instead, new paint was just applied on it. Apart from this process allowing formation of softer edges, the applied colors were allowed to dry more naturally.

After watching their counterparts walk away from the normal practices, musicians also decided to defy traditional forms of song composition. They started employing the use of more dissonant harmonies that varied in arrangement to convey personal moods and feelings. This gave them the freedom to propose feelings and places through indefinite beats and dynamic, shifting harmonies. What they wanted to achieve was using light and colors to vary tone, tempo and pitch.

Impressionism did not just stop with painters and musicians but writers and poets also adopted it. They began using imagery and symbolism to express their views, instead of using the customary premeditated traits of some proceedings and objects. Instead of trying to understand their know-how, writers now adopted a style that majorly focused on the state of mind of a character, as drawn from their senses. On the hand, poetry started looking for answers from the major themes instead of describing the real feelings that are experienced.

A wider and more open way of looking at art in general was improved by impressionism. It gave artists a chance to try out their own things while at the same time using conventional methods. It is because of this reason that contemporary creativity forms were developed.

Modern impressionist artists can thus be said to be the fathers of most modern day works of art. Apart from helping revolutionize the way painting had been previously perceived, they also helped change the style of music and writing. It can be therefore said that impressionism was the biggest thing that ever happened to the world of entertainment.
